Other Causes of Hypopituitarism (2) Several granulomatous or infiltrative processes, including sarcoidosis or Langerhans' cell histiocytosis X (previously known as histiocytosis or eosinophilic granuloma), may involve the hypothalamus and cause hypopituitarism, particularly diabetes insipidus. Infections such as tuberculosis are now seen only rarely but may cause hypopituitarism associated with basal meningitis.
